My family and I recently joined Minnie and her pals at Cape May Cafe for Breakfast. We don’t normally book character dining on our Disney vacations, but we wanted to check out Disney’s Gingerbread displays at Beach Club and Boardwalk. Our kids are still under 10, so we figured we might as well try it while they are still young!
What Are Character Meals?
Character meals are a wonderful way to meet some of your favorite Disney friends without having to step foot inside a park. If meeting characters are important during your vacation, this is a great way to meet them without having to wait in long lines during your park visits.
Walt Disney World offers many character meals located at various locations. Each dining location typically has specific characters and themes, but characters can change without notice. This applies more to locations that offer dining with princesses and other face characters. You do need a reservation for all character dining, and they often fill up quickly, so make sure to check with your TA or set your alarm 60 days out from your trip to grab a reservation!
Where is Cape May Cafe & How to Get There
Cape May Cafe is located at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. If you are staying at either Beach Club, Yacht Club, Boardwalk, or Swan and Dolphin, Cape May Cafe is just a walk away! You can browse David’s DVC Rental page to see if any of these resorts are available during your stay.
If you are staying elsewhere on property, you will need to either call an Uber or a Minnie Van. Another option is to take a bus from either a park or Disney Springs. This is a free option, however, you need to add extra travel time to your day to make sure you are not late for your reservation.
Characters, Theme, & Price
The theme of this meal is Minnie’s Beach Bash, and it is only a character meal during breakfast hours. Current pricing is $33 per child and $49 per adult, plus tax and gratuity. Minnie and her friends have invited you for a breakfast that features flavors of the New England coast.
Again, characters are subject to change, but from my research, the ones here stay pretty consistent. During our meal, we encountered Minnie, Daisy, Donald, and Goofy dressed in their beach best.
Our character interactions were wonderful. Each one took time with us, and we didn’t feel rushed. You are allowed to take photos and give hugs. Their costumes were simply adorable, and they loved interacting with our outfits too! They also do a cute beach dance around the restaurant during certain times of the meal.
They will sign autographs, but if you’re like me and forget them, you get a souvenir card that has all of their signatures.
Menu
I will be honest with you, I wasn’t very excited about the food. Breakfast is my least favorite meal of the day, and I had heard very mixed reviews about buffet style options for breakfast at character meals.
We scheduled our reservation for 11:00 a.m. (the later end of the experience), which I would highly recommend, if possible. It was less crowded, and I was pretty hungry by the time of our meal.
As we were seated, we were asked about allergy issues, as you can notify Disney of this when you make your reservation. My daughter has a lactose intolerance, so we were given an allergy-friendly menu. ( I forgot to take a photo of this, sorry! 😞 )
Because it’s a buffet, your menu will provide a guide as to what’s safe and what’s not. Our server also brought my daughter her own set of rolls, butter, and Mickey Waffles.
We were given a drink menu and quick rundown of how things work. My husband and I ordered some Pog juice, and our server delivered their famous Salted Carmel Beach Buns.
They have your basic buffet offerings like an omelet and meat carving station, fruit, sausage, bacon, eggs, and of course, Mickey & Minnie waffles. All were excellent, but there were definitely a few stand outs that I think make the meal better than a regular breakfast buffet.
Starting with the cheddar biscuits and gravy. These were so incredibly delicious that they had to keep restocking them, and I wasn’t even able to grab a proper photo! But, adding the cheddar to the biscuits gives this traditional dish a nice twist.
I also really enjoyed the eggs benedict, asparagus, and breakfast potatoes. These were all seasoned well, and the eggs benedict were cooked just right.
Another one of my favorites was the pancakes. I know it’s such a basic and simple breakfast item, but there was something special about the chocolate chip pancakes. They also offered a seasonal flavor of pumpkin, which was a delight!
Grits and crepes were also offered, but I am not a grits fan. As someone who has never made a successful crepe, I thought they were good. I liked that they offered different toppings with the choices.
Overall, we thought this was a good meal. My kids aren’t very picky eaters and enjoyed everything they had to offer, but they do also have simple items like oatmeal and yogurt.
What to Wear
We will always say that you do not have to dress up or theme your outfits in order to have a good time. However, I will say that it CAN make your experience a little more special. As I previously mentioned, the characters reacted to what we were wearing, and it certainly added a little more magic to our meal.
What I Wore
While I didn’t wear this exact outfit, this is inspired by what I wore! It was too cold on our trip for a dress, so I opted for a blue and white striped shirt instead. Beach Club Resort is beautifully themed with blues and corals, so I wanted to make sure those elements were represented. I’ve had this hat for years, and it’s always a hit with characters. Donald told me I need to cut off the Mickey ears so we could be twins! 😂
What My Daughter Wore
Our trip was during the Christmas season, so I’ve adjusted my daughter’s look a little bit to fit a year-round theme. Both Minnie and Daisy loved her shirt and made her feel so special for wearing it. I’ve added some layers because it’s been unseasonably cold in Florida lately!
What My Son Wore
My son likes to dress “fancy”. He loves wearing button-up shirts and specifically asked to wear one for this meal. Although he requested Goofy, I wasn’t able to find a button-up in his size with Goofy. But, he was happy with the surfing Mickey.
If you have a kiddo that doesn’t love Mickey or Princesses, finding outfits or shirts can be difficult. Most big box stores stick to the classic characters, so if you’re looking for something different, you can always check out our customized services! We will be happy to create and plan a look for you or your family!
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Even though I am not a big breakfast person, I still liked what I ate and would recommend it to anyone wanting to try a character meal. The location, service, and character experience were all wonderful.
If you have the opportunity to dine here, let us know what you think in the comments! We’d love to know if you agree or what you’d like to see differently. No matter what, we hope you have a magical vacation!
